Encountering exception in GenerateTokenInGroup and this is only happening from AustraliaEast and working as expected from EastAsia and CentralUs

 

var generateTokenRequestParameters = new GenerateTokenRequest(accessLevel: "view");
var tokenResponse = client.Reports.GenerateTokenInGroup(groupId, reportId, generateTokenRequestParameters);

 

I am wondering what's wrong. It's the same code that is working from 2 data centers and not from the other. Anyone who has encountered this exception: Operation returned an invalid status code '421' ?

PowerBI Embedded not accepting connections using service principal and security secret.

We are connecting to PowerBi Embedded using stored credentials (service principal with a secret.).  We are using this via an Azure .net core IIS service to embedd iframes in our website.

 

This has been working fine for several weeks, but stopped working yesterday. It appears the secret is not being accepted.

We also have a development instance trying to connect to the same reports. (The reports run fine in the PowerBI portal)

 

We've enabled debugging and are receiving the following error.

We've deleted and recreated the service principal and redeployed the IIS service but it still won't work.

 

What have we missed? Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Importing Excel Data using Powerflow

Hi All

 

I'm running into a really random issue when importing data from Excel using a dataflow

 

Below is a sample image of my data.
This issue i am facing is column I, whenever there is a description that has a large value with multiple rows etc, the dataload will error out and not bring in data from columns J, K, L. There error i will receive from the dataflow is cannot parse information in column J as dateformat however this column is not set to date neither is column K or L


When i shorten the value in column I (ie reduce to a single sentance) it will load in the data without an issue

no other row have this issue, only ones with really long values (current data set only has one row with long description)

Dataflow version management notification

Hi Community,

 

I am a member in a premium workspace.  There are multiple members in the group.  We have many dataflows from various sources created by different members in the group.   Each member use other's dataflows in their dashboard as per their requirements.

 

Sometimes, it is not enough for other members to get a glance of the data from the columns list and they take control over the dataflow to check the data.  When they are done, they inform the owner to take control back.

 

But sometimes members forget to notify the owner and after taking control over the dataflow, they realise that they actually do not have access to some of the data sources.  This causes dataflow refresh failure because the current owner does not have the authorization to the source.

 

Other instances, the other user make some changes in the query and save it, which also sometimes they forget to notify the owner of the dataflow.  This also sometimes causes the dataflow to fail the refresh.

 

My query is that is that we can do version control in the dataflow and the owner gets notification when another user takes control of the dataflow along with the changes they make?

 

Appreciate any suggestion.

Power BI Workspace connection to teamsite

I need help with Power BI workspaces. I want to connect a new Microsoft Teams Team without the automatic Power BI workspace, to a workspace to share data, etc. 

When I creat a new normal workspace and want to connect it to the Sharepoint Onedrive following Error appears:

Power BI, API, ADF: Refresh does not always work.

Hi,

 

I have followed this instruction to refresh my dataset with every run of the ADF pipeline.

However, the issue is, that it does not always work. The action would be marked as completed on the ADF side, and I am also able to see it as completed in the Power BI refresh history. Therefore, I am not able to implement a retry logic, since it's not marked as failed there.

The run at 8:40 AM was triggered from the pipeline, and you can see that it had lasted only for few seconds. On the other hand, the refresh at 9 AM, took almost 15 minutes, and I was able to see the up-to-date data in the Power BI. However, the difference is that the one at 9 AM was a scheduled refresh of my dataset(not related to the pipeline runs). It looks to me almost like a bug, since the call I make is correct, the response is correct, the PBI appears to refresh the dataset, but the dataset does not really refresh.

Clean up: how to find & delete inactive workspaces?

Hi,

 

To clean up our Power BI environment, we want to delete all inactive workspaces (e.g. no report/dashboard is viewed in the past 60 days). Three questions about that:

 

1. How do we find out which workspaces are inactive?

2. Is there a way to automate this process (e.g. email will be sent to owners after 30 inactive days, and automatic deletion after 60 inactive days).

3. Are there additional/other best practices for cleaning the environment?

How to remove access of existing user

Hi,

This may sound pretty obvious, however, I do need help on this.

How do I remove access of an report user? It used to be pretty easy under Manage Permission. However, I couldn't find such option after  the 'new sharing experience'.

Sharing individual reports or report-packages

Hi,

 

So far I have been sharing reports by giving view-rights to workspaces. I can't really see the benefits of using App's in Power BI. Could someone clarify what the benefits of using App's is? My use cases are the following:

 

I have 6 workspaces. Mostly I can share an entire workspace with the audience. However, some reports require giving rights to only specific reports in a workspace. How do i limit that the user can only see some of the reports in a workspace? Should i use Apps for this?

Web gateway source scheduled with parameter

Hello, i have a report published in powerbi where the report is connecting to an api call to get some data. This api call is driven by a parameter inside the report.

 

When publishing this apicall has to be added to the gateway sources in order to be selected in connections.

I can see in settings the parameter set in the report but how can i set the datasource to user this parameter like

 

Data Source name : myService

Data Source Type: Web

URL: https://myService?myparam=5

 

Where 5 comes from the report as parameter. 

 

https://myService?param1=#MyPar

is not working when the parameter name is MyPar in the report with value 5.

 

 

I did try to fix the report using the relative path so i have a query like:

= Json.Document(Web.Contents("https://myServer/myservice/api",[RelativePath="docStatus",Query=[MyPar=Text.From(docId)]]))

 

Inside the powerbi desktop this works fine.

In the powerbi service it is asking to add it to gateway.

Then in the url it placed only 

"https://myServer/myservice/api" and then i have 404 error on checking connection to the gateway. the message is

"Unable to connect to the data source undefined."

'Unrecognizable fields in this visual' error

I'm getting reports from different users that they can't see certain data visuals in the Power BI service reports and instead are getting an error message 'Unrecognized fields in this visual'.  However, when I go to the same report, I am not getting that message and am able to see the reprot and its data. 

 

What's interesting, people are having the same issue on different report tabs, while some are having an issue on tab A other can see the data on tab 'A' but can't see tab 'B' data and are getting the error message.

 

Does anyone know the solution for this issue?

Power BI Rest API Limit

I'm building some admin reports, the current one i'd like to show who has access to all our datasets, of which there are 600 - 700. I'm using the Power BI Rest API via an app registration in Power BI Desktop , which works for most of the API functions but the GetDatasetUsersAsAdmin is limited to 200 so falls over with a 429 error, what would be the simplest method of handling this, i'd like to publish the report to the Power BI Service and refresh the dataset on a schedule.

Manage Credentials Used When Connecting to Data Source

Hi all,

I have a Power BI report currently connected to Azure SQL using SQL Authentication. I am trying to update the data source to connect using a Microsoft Account instead.

 

After publishing the report with updated credentials, on Power BI service I see that the connection to Azure SQL is still using SQL Authentication.

 

Is this an expected behaviour? How do I manage the credentials that are used to connect to the Data Source?

 

We are not using a Gateway to connect to the source.

Power BI Dataflow cant read small decimals or columns that are mostly 0

I have a csv files with 600+ rows. There is no problem reading into Power BI Desktop but when read into Power BI dataflow, I encountered the following issues:

1. Columns with mostly 0 are read as all 0 -> tried sorting but end up other columns will end up becoming zero.

2. decimal numbers that are very small are read as 0 (e.g. 0.00000184 is read as 0) -> in order to avoid small decimals that are read as 0, i have converted it into text but small decimal ends up being read as scientific format 12E05 and not able to convert back into numbers.

Dear Experts,

Can you please let me know if there is any power Bi command line utility tool available ?

 

Requirement:

We have airflow & we want to call the power BI utility to refresh the dataset. This is the automation request from customer where we have to use airflow to automate the dataset refresh in Power BI service.
