Timeout Refresh errors azure sql sources; refresh time range 15 to 180 min? How to diagnose?

1) 2 pbix in powerbi service

2) refresh schedule at 12am and 2am when nothing is running on our azure sql instance

2a) refresh durations range from 17 minutes to 3 hours ; refresh failures range from 1 hr to 2 hrs over 13 days

3) all data sources in both are set to 3 hr timeout

4) desktop refreshes work

Unable to deploy to XMLA Endpoint from SSDT

I have built a data model in SSDT as an analysis services tabular project. When I try to deploy to a premium workspace using the XMLA Endpoint, I get the following error on all of my tables :

 

Failed to save modifications to the server. Error returned: '{"error":{"code":"DMTS_MonikerWithUnboundDataSources","pbi.error":{"code":"DMTS_MonikerWithUnboundDataSources","details":[{"code":"Server","detail":{"type":1,"value":"sqladl\\sql_adl"}},{"code":"Database","detail":{"type":1,"value":"consulting_adl"}},{"code":"ConnectionType","detail":{"type":0,"value":"Sql"}}],"exceptionCulprit":1}}}

 

When I researched the error, it appears to be related to gateway settings, which there is no place for in SSDT that I can find. Is this something that will be fixed in future versions of SSDT / Power BI service ?

Paginated Report not working

Hi All

Since PBI doesn't send report as email, i opted for paginated report. The below steps are what i followed

 

1) Downloaded Power BI Report builder.

2) Added Oracle datasource and tested Successfully.

3) Have a SQL Query that worked in TOAD and in the report builder. Report executed successfully.

4) Save the .rdl file locally.

5) Went to PBI Service and navigated to the workspace i created-->getdata-->file-->and the report was loaded.

Issue

When i clicked on the report i am getting the following message

 
 

Unable to render paginated report

There was an error contacting an underlying data source. Manage your credentials or gateway settings on the management page. Please verify that the data source is available, your credentials are correct and that your gateway settings are valid.Please try again later or contact support. If you contact support, please provide these details.Show technical details Get help
 
Trouble Shooting : Navigated to Manage Gateways  and checked the connection , it was successful, but sill not able to get to the report.

Scheduled Refresh - Trying to add data source File that is located in Remote Desktop location

I'm trying to setup a Scheduled Refresh for my datasets. The dataset contains a .csv file that is located on a Remote Desktop location. I use my MacBook to access this Remote Desktop and I also create reports on that same Remote Desktop using Power BI Desktop. In BI Desktop, it was easy to connect to the .csv file as it is located on that machine itself. So I simply just had to open the containing folder on my Remote Desktop and select that .csv file. However, when I have uploaded the report onto Power BI Service, I wanted to setup Scheduled Refresh on my data. I tried the full path of the .csv file as well as the Windows credentials for logging into the Remote Desktop, but I am ending up with an error instead.

Any ideas what is going wrong? Is the Power BI Service attempting to access my Macbook's local harddrive C: instead? How does it know where the file on Remote Desktop is located?

Restrict access to Dataflow

Hi,

 

I (the administrator) have granted a user access to 1 App. The associated workspace has 1 dataflow. The user is not granted a role in the workspace itself nor does it have acces to any other workspaces or App. Just 1 App. 

 

In Power BI desktop the user is now able to connect to Power BI Dataflows and can see, transform and load all Dataflows (!) within the tenant. Also the dataflows in other workspace. How is this possible? And how can I restrict the user to only use the dataflow that is associated to his App?

Refresh Order of a Dataset

Hello everyone, 
Lets say that in my dataset has 10 REST queries, and I want to know how powerBI Service works with them. When I click to Refresh Dataset in PowerBI Service:

Are all queries started at the same time? and gather the data at the same time too?

Maybe powerBI service do the refresh sequentially? (Until 1 query finishes, dont start another one)

Anyone has idea about this?¿

Analyze in Excel connection problem - NEW failed to connect to the url https //api.powerbi.com

I've recently developed a Analyze in Excel report that links to the Dataset published in PBI Service.

From today the report can't be refreshed, and even if I download the .odc file from newly published one. I've got same issue.

After this info window I'm login with my credentials, getting same information window and .odc file is closed.

I'm sure that i have full admin access to the dataset, and its report, can open it in PBI Service.

 

 Troubleshooting done:

1) Followed the https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/collaborate-share/desktop-troubleshooting-analyze-in-excel and installed the new OLEDB drivers.

2) Updated PBI Desktop to newest version and published dataset again

3) Exported the blank .odc file with a new connection to dataset
4) Exchanged the connction properties with the newly generated .odc file

Any ideas how to fix or troubleshoot this issue ?

Cannot add user with same domain to Power BI Pro

My company has Pro licenses. We need to be able to add a user whose email uses the same domain as the PowerBI account, and who has but who does not use Office 365. A number of other employees' emails pop up and I can add them, but I can't add this one particular user.

 

Does the user have to use Office 365 to use a Power BI Pro license? Can I just manually add this employee's email to my tenant since his email domain is the same as the domain tied to the Power BI account? Or does this employee have to be using Office 365 first?

Connection to SAP BW Application server

Hi,

I updated the power bi today. Unfortunatelly, I get error power query editor while selecting data fields from BW application server. The date related data gives error. I have the Product Version: 2.82.5858.961 (20.06) (x64)

 

What can I do? is there any possibility to download the older version?

Gateway Security

Good morning Power BI users,

 

I'm in need of understanding the security for the Gateways.  We have setup a Gateway on one of our utility servers.  There are just two employees that have access to this gateway, myself and one of our Network guys.  I'm able to refresh our dataset on schedule since I do have access to the gateway.  However, we have a third employee that is in charge to push new datasets and report and he would like to also setup data refresh schedules on his datasets.  However, it looks like the only way for him to a have access to the gateway is to give him Administrative access tot he gateway.  Is this correct or am I missing another setting somewhere?  Thank you all.

Settings Dataset Error

Good Day All

 

I am stuck and I need your help. I have set up an on premises gateway which is connected and working, i have then added the datasources which are conneced and working. 

 

When I go to the settings folder on the web, choose dataset and choose the correct report. I then get the option to choose gateway connection and map data sources in the dataset to the gateway sources. The excel connection maps no problem!

 

My issue is the SQL database gateway source is not recognised, it does not appear on the map dropdown menu. 

 

I have tried to add the dataset source use the add to gateway option, which i run through and connect but when i jump back through to settings, sql database source still does not appear or be recognised.

 

Any suggestions?

Unable to access my workspace "Cosmos DB Engineering Systems"

All the sudden I don't have access this workspace, and I don't know why.  I am the owner of this workspace (I created it years ago) but for some reason I find I am not now and I don't see it in my list of workspaces. Can someone help get me access to this workspace again?

Determine Personal Workspace Owner within Impact Analysis

I have a dataset where users have permissions to build reports using that dataset. Using the Impact Analysis pane within the Lineage View, I can see that I have 1 report built using that dataset within my workspace/app and 11 other users have reports built using that dataset within their personal workspaces.

 

How can I determine the owner of the those personal workspaces?

 

Prior to the Impact Analysis pane, there was a pane called "View Related" (if memory serves). Within that pane, a dataset owner would be notified of users who have built reports using that dataset within their personal workspaces. And, if I hovered over the icon that proivided that notification, the users email address would appear in a tooltip. However, that functionality appears to be gone.

Permissions on SharePoint / OneDrive for Power BI Pro license

I would like to be able to access a file (simple SharePoint list) via Power BI from my company's SharePoint site. The person in charge of data entry on the list would need write access to it, obviously, but I'd only ever need to read it in Power BI. 

 

Ideally, the list would be the output from a SQL query, and the data entry person would then update a single column of data on the list with information that's not kept in our CRM.

 

We've used a web app in the past to accomplish tasks like this, but I'd like to see if we can get this implemented without having to build an app.

 

Mainly, I don't yet know where to store the document on our SharePoint site to be able to 1) adequately permission it for data entry and consumption and 2) access it via Power BI.

 

Thanks for any thoughts you may have on my scenario!

Power BI stress test for premium capacity

Hi all,

I have a P1 capacity and I need to perform some stress test in order to test the peak rated load and the predicted supported load. I would like to know how many users can open and refresh the same reports at the same time and which is the dependency of the cpu performance with respect to the number of connected users. 

Can someone suggest me how to obtain such information (e.g. a tool in order to get these informations)?

Web contents failed to get contents from Google sheet - Internal Service Error

Hi, this morning my Power BI refresh reschedules stop working for my Google Sheet and I can't even manually refresh my data.

 

It has been working for the whole time until this morning.

 

I've checked the file name, location and confirmed it's still the same and even try to connect to another Google sheet and it still had the same problem.

Data not visible in data model ( only headers are visible)

Dear All,

 

I have called some data from excel and have applied " close & apply in power bi.  However when i go to data model, only headers are visible.  Is there any reason behind that? Can someone please advise what has happen.

Custom date selection on dashboard reports

Hi All, 

 

By default, when we open a Dashboard we need to display the data for last one month in th report. if users wants to change the selections they will choose the start date and end date in the slicers and reports needs to display the data accordingly. 

 

Can any one suggest how to acheive this.
