RLS Issue

Hi Everyone,

I have created a report and implemented RLS to allow role-based access. It worked fine locally on a PowerBI desktop. However, when I publish it in the PowerBI service and share the report's URL with another person to check, those people who try to open the URL get an error message, as shown in the following screen. So my question is, does the viewer need to have a Pro/Premium account to view the report created based on RLS? I do have a Premium account, but others have free accounts.

How to apply RLS without a role

Hi everyone,

My question is very simple. I want to secure my Power BI using the userprincipalname() function in Power BI, which has always worked well for me. The problem is that it's not practical to manually maintain a list of emails in the service to which security is applied, as this list can change daily. Is there a way to secure without needing to add all the emails to a role? Perhaps it's possible to have all users default to a role? If this isn't possible, is there a way to add emails to the role's list via API?

Just so you understand me, what I want to avoid its to manually define the email list here, I want it to be automatic/dynamic:

Hi,

I can not find any API supporting finding metadata for the latest refresh on semantic models having data sources located in OneDrive. Do anyone have a solution for this?

Report Sharing - What does "People in your organization" does exactly means?

Hi,

We want to share a Power BI report. Our tenant includes our domain A users as well as other domain (B) users imported from another tenant. We would like to share the report only to the users of our domain.

My doubts are:

-When selecting the option "People in your organization" which members will be granted? All tenant members(A+B) or only the ones of our domain A?

-Our tenant also includes guest users. Are also them considered as "People in your organization"?

Alfons

Thanks

Alfons

Is their a way to customize the loading spinner icon (i.e. Make it bigger, change the color or say instead of that put a loading icon 0 to 100%) in order to make it clear that a visualisation is loading in Service.

Time interval of inactivity before auto-pause and member gateways - how does this affect our users

Hi folks!

We're looking at using a Virtual Network Data Gateway to connect from our Fabric Capacity to Azure SQL, and I was wondering a couple of things about how it operated in practice:

- I'm looking at the Time interval of inactivity before auto-pause, and noting the document Manage virtual network (VNet) data gateway high availability and load balancing | Microsoft Learn that suggests that stopping auto-pause is not an option - Does this mean that after that period, our next customer to view a report (in power BI embedded) will have to wait a couple of minutes before they view the report? Has anyone found a way past that limitation?

- On the number of member gateways - is there any metrics to see when that 6 query limit is hit? I'd like to make a data driven decision on that but can't see any data.

Thanks,

Dave.

PowerBI Fabric licensing Query

Can someone guide me whteher the premium per user license will be enough for me to work with lakehouse, synapse and pipelines in microsoft fabric ? Or Would I have to buy a fabric capacity itself (If yes, how to go ahead with this)

Lastly, what are the charges incurred for the data loads etc into lakehouse? Is there any pricing calculator for this SaaS.

Difference between "normal" semantic model and default semantic model in a Lakehouse?

Hi to all,

we're trying to understand how to move an existing semantic model made on PBI Desktop to a Default Semantic Model on a Lakehouse.

We're experiencing some differences in capabilities, and we cannot find anything in the documentation explaining.

Here are the main issues:

  1. Can't create a many-to-many relationship (see screenshot)

    daniele_tiles_0-1714740700671.png

  2. Can't create a column with spaces
  3. Can't create a column with some special characters (like è,à,... and so on).

While the second and the third point are understandable (but I'd like to have some doc about it), the first one is really strange. I really think that many-to-many relationships should be avoided, unfortunately they exists, and if this isn't supported, we can't use the automatic code to generate the PBI Query Template.

Thanks

Daniele

Display Power BI report within SharePoint Page

Hello,

I have a Power BI Pro license within my organization. We have a SharePoint where I would like to display a report using the embed system (as explained here Embed a report web part in SharePoint Online - Power BI | Microsoft Learn).

I followed all the steps (creating a page, adding the PowerBI widget, finding the URL for "embed report" in SharePoint Online and pasting it within the settings of Power Bi in SharePoint Page), but it doesn't display anything. Just a blank space.

Any suggestions?

Hello,

I'm working on some reports and the users would like to disable subscriptions for these reports on App/Workspace Level.

I was able to find the settings to disable subscriptions for whole tenant, but can't find the way to do it on App/Workspace Level.

is it possible?

Thank you,

Andriy

Read permission on in place shared semantic model

$

I have a semantic model in my tenant which is shared to some users who are external to my organization. They can correctly access and build report on the shared dataset connected in direct query. They want to share their report with other users in their organization who shouldn't be able to build new report from the shared dataset. I thought it was enough to give these new user read permission on the shared dataset, but with only read they can't see the data. If I give them full permission everything is fine.

Is there some limitation to this kind of sharing such that read is not enough?

converting to powerplatform.dataflows

Hello,

I have an old dataflow that is using Source = PowerBI.Dataflows([IncludeGroups = false, SourceDataflowId = "lots of lettters and numbers"]), and I need to convert it to the new PowerPlatform.Dataflows([]) version. Can someone please explain what the options that are being used in the PowerBI version are doing? Or is there a list of those options for each version somewhere that I can't seem to find?

Full example of the old dataflow

Source = PowerBI.Dataflows([IncludeGroups = false, SourceDataflowId = "3f5d716e-8ef7-434a-9497-xxxxxxxxxxxx"]), #"Navigation 1" = Source{[workspaceId = "4ccd6c6f-a083-47c4-8fc1-xxxxxxxxxxxx"]}[Data], #"Navigation 2" = #"Navigation 1"{[dataflowId = "bce97895-c91a-4dca-bff5-xxxxxxxxxxxx"]}[Data],

Export CSV data from a visual with separated underlying model

$

I am struggling to understand how I can export to excel the exact data showing in a table visual from the powerbi service. I am able to use the Analyze in Excel button on the Semantic Model itself and view all the data. But I have a separate report with visuals which I want to be able to export the data from. When I try to use Analyze in Excel on the report, it returns a blank csv.

It looks like there is also an export to .csv option for visuals that have been added to a dashboard, is this not an option from the report itself (in an app for example)? And when I click the button it again downloads an empty csv.

Ultimately what I want is for a report user to be able to download the data from a selected visual only (not the entire model) and look at it in excel. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Disabling / enabling gateway in cluster, using a non-interactive script and a service principal

$

Hi,

I'm trying to write a script that can be used to disable/enable a gateway within a cluster, using a service principal. This script is to be called by other scripts performing maintenance on the servers that the gateway are installed on (applying Windows server updates for example).

The general process is this: disable gateway ==> wait until dataset refreshes running on gateway are finished (or until timeout) ==> apply updates, reboot server ==> enable gateway

Applying this process sequentially to different gateways in a cluster results in updates being applied with no downtime and no interrupted dataset refreshes (unless a refresh is too long and hits the timeout mentioned above).

My issue is that I'm not finding a way to do the parts in bold (disable/enable gateway) with both:

  1. No manual intervention
  2. A service principal

Here are the options that I've explored:

  • The OnPremisesDataGatewayHAMgmt PowerShell module: the Set-OnPremisesDataGateway cmdlet allows disabling/enabling a gateway in a cluster, however the module only allows interactive authentication (at least as far as I can tell). The module also only works with PowerShell 5, which makes me think it may be obsoleted at some point.
  • The DataGateway module: recommended by Microsoft as a replacement for OnPremisesDataGatewayHAMgmt on PS7. Has more functions, and allows service principal authentication, but doesn't seem to have a cmdlet to disable/enable a gateway in a cluster.
  • Looking at the code of OnPremisesDataGatewayHAMgmt cmdlets, I was able to hack something that authenticates non-interactively, and then calls the same APIs as the module to disable/enable gateways. This works fine, but not with a service principal: the API endpoints (which look like https://wabi-west-europe-b-primary-redirect.analysis.windows.net/unifiedgateway/gatewayclusters/{gatewayClusterId}/gateways/{gatewayId}) don't seem to accept a bearer token generated with a call with grant_type = client_credentials to the OAuth2.0 login API (only works with a token generated with a call with grant_type = password)

Any idea on how I can do this?

Are there better ways to automatically apply updates to gateway servers without interrupting dataset refreshes?

create a reduced model linked to the first

$

I have a Power BI Premium workspace where I've built a semantic model with 10 years of historical data. Now, I need to create a second semantic model within the same workspace, but this one should only include the last 2 years of data for specific, limited use cases.

I want to set up a data pipeline so that whenever the main semantic model refreshes, the secondary model automatically refreshes as well, ensuring both stay synchronized. How can I achieve this without having two independent models that refresh separately?

Report Name Change

Hello - I share my reports via the URL and the share functions within PBI Service. My question is, if I change the name, will the existing links become invalid? Thanks for your time.

Example: I want to change this name to something else.
