Figuring out what Datasource a Dataset is using...

We are in the process of rolling out Power BI to our organization and we are using a gateway to connect to our on premise Analysis Services instance. Under the gateway we have setup two data sources, one to DEV and one to PROD. Before, we go live we want to figure out how we can easily determine what data source a report's dataset is pointing at so we can verify whether the appropiate data source DEV versus PROD is used when we deploy to our production workspaces.

Is there an easy way to do this?

Mobile View ( only ) dashboard tiles / Visualization

Hi community,

Is it possible to have some tiles or viz. be available in mobile dashboard only and not in main web dashboard.

The Reason I am wanting this is, as I have some viz. for my web view, which say is a graph on monthly level data. On mobile view, I do not want to show this data ( which I can opt not to display) instead some single value. But if I add a tile in my report and pin it, it has to be present in my web view as well.

Thanks.

Controlling size of bubble on map visualization

I have a map visualization that shows the Port of Entry and I have the Value of the products chosen to control the size of the bubble.  This is working fine on the Desktop Report.  However, when I publish to Power BI and review the report, all of the Bubbles are the same size.  What am I doing wrong?  The 1st snapshot below is from Desktop, the 2nd is after publishing to Power BI.  (I hope you can see the screenshots)

Mobile vew dashboard - live page pin

Hi Community,

I have created a report on desktop and pinned a live page on to the dashboard.

It works fine for the web view, but in mobile view, as soon as I have pinned the live page, I cannot see any tiles including the live page and other tiles available for customization in mobile view.

These are showing up on the dashboard on my phone, but I cannot see them on the webpage where I have to customize them , their size, poistion, or even if I want it on the mobile or not.

so practically what is happening, is , if I pin a live page along with other vis. to be used on a dashboard, I can play around for customization for web view but have no visibility or control on what is happening in mobie view.

Has anyone else got any such issue and is there a solution to it.

P.S. I did not encounter this problem initially, but later I updated the desktop version and updated the report , and got this issue.

not sure if it is in new desktop version or if there is something else I am missing.

The remote name could not be resolved: 'determine.atlassian.net'.

Using PowerBI Web

The enpoint referenced is being monitored and has been available when the PowerBI connection shows the error.

How can we diagnose further what is going on?

Connecting Power BI .com to Azure SQL database

Due to security reasons, we have to turn off "Allow Azure services " setting on Azure SQL database. The power BI reports that are published no longer work and error is reported when the user logs into powerbi.com

Are there any alternatives such as add IP range of Power BI server or interject any service between azure sql and power bi, restrict inbound access of azure sql to this service

Thanks

Anyone from New Zealand Government using the online Power BI service yet?

Howdy folks. I've been playing around with PowerBI Desktop in the New Zealand Government department in which I work. We're looking at switching on the PowerBI Report Server so we can share reports, as we already have the requisite PowerBI Premium licencing under our Software Assurance and Enterprise Agreement. (We *would* have to buy some PowerBI Pro subscription dev licences for a few of us developing PowerBI reports, but that’s a cost we’re happy with given it’s just $10USD per month per dev.)

But really, we'd prefer to use the cloud service, given the additional features it unlocks. I'm just about to start delving a little further into what signoffs we’d need in order to utilize the PowerBI service. Given that PowerBI is an off-the-shelf Azure-based service – and that DIA have provided some guidance specifically to support adoption of the Azure services– I’m wondering if the process to procure such a service is as overly onerous as I imagine it is.

If we wanted to seriously consider using the Azure-based PowerBI service – without getting dragged down into a quagmire – does anyone have any words of wisdom around how to proceed, without getting stonewalled by the automatic 'too hard' I suspect will roll automatically off the tongues of certain types? It always helps if someone else has already jumped in the water, and can talk us (and other decision makers) through the process they went through themselves. We want to do this above the radar, but we don't want to get shot down unneccassarily by friendly fire ;-)

POWER BI EMBEDDED

Hi all,

We have few concerns when we creating workspace in azure using power bi embedded and we need suggestions for few queries.

1. Can anyone tell us the reason why we are not able to create workspace in azure using power bi embedded.
If there is any other possibility of doing this please let me know.

Attaching the azure portal screenshot indicating that powerbi pro license is added, but still not having permission to create new collection in powerbi embedded.

2. The steps mentioned in the link doesn't specify whether we can bring RLS into our dataset or not.

https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/powerbi-developer-overview-of-power-bi-rest-api/

3. Our whole process is like this,

i) create a report using power bi desktop with azure SQL database and saving it as pbix file (applying RLS right here)

ii) our application is already in azure and we need to embedd our power bi dashbaord into our application.

iii) So based on the user logging into our application, dashboard will dynamically show the visualization based on the RLS set.

4. Where we are facing issue is when we tried to create workspace, we are not able to create it even though we having power bi pro license.

We do have AAD user tenant, and the steps mentioned in the documentation of power bi embedded suggests us to create a app for power bi within that report will be embedded. That is not our focus. Our focus is bringing power bi dashboard into our application and visualize the data based on the logged in user.

somewhere in the documentation, they do have mentioned that pro license is enough for developing a solution and when we are testing and deploying premium license is needed. Can anyone please explain what is the process involved in here in detail.

Thanks in advance. Screenshots attached below.

What happens when you share a dashboard in a Workspace

Hi

I have created a Workspace for a team, they use the shared functionality in Power BI, OneDrive, Teams, OneNote etc. My question is if I go to a Dashboard within that Workspace and share it with a user outside of that team, what will they have access to? Just the related Dashboard, Reports, & Dataset, or will they have access to all content of the workspace including OneDrive, Teams etc?

Cheers

Power BI Gov Issues

recently we ended our use of the Power BI commercial site and moved to the Gov version.

We once used the Azure EA content pack to display cost reporting.  Currently only subsets of that data are returned.  Specifically nothing with an actual cost value is returned in the dataset.

Another issue is that when attempting to pull data from VSTS (again content pack) the process fails.  This did work in the commercial version as long as you didn't attempt to pull too much data.

Finally we are very interested in using ArcGIS.  We can only use on the free local development tools.  When attempting to use via app.powerbigov.us it says it's been disabled by the admin.  Does anyone know the settings that need modified to allow access.  Also is there any upcoming ability to embed ArcGIS?  This is of great interest.

According to Planview documentation is it possible to connect cubes directly in Power BI Desktop, using SQL Server Analysis Service as datasource type.

Is it possible to use the same data source in Power Bi online Services?

Can't add Google Analytics account

Hello everyone,

Recently I was testing the use of setting up GA in Power BI online. After I was done I deleted the data set.

Now I'm trying to re-add GA to my Power BI dashboard, however I keep getting the same connection error. It seems to be account-bound, because on my test Microsoft account I can add GA to my dashboard.

I'm getting the follow error message after logging in to my google account from 'Get services' after selecting oAuth2. It's been the same for the last week so it doesn't seem to be a server issue.

How-to Video for Viewers using reports

$

Hello,

We are replacing our Excel-based reporting system with Power BI. Reports are displayed via iframes on a website. That being said, the reports available to viewers will be much more interactive than what they are used it.

Do you know of any training videos that would show a viewer all of the features of viewing Power BI reports? i.e ability to drill down, filter, etc.

Thank you!

Power BI Apps Icon

I watched the GuyInACube video about apps (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ey5pyrr7Lk8&vl=en) and at around the 5:00 minute mark he talks about changing the icon that is associated with a given app.  The method is straight forward and I can get the icon/image to change, but the quality of the image (when viewed inside the Apps area of Power BI in a browser goes from 100% to 20% (all pixelated and unrecognizable).  Are there certain dimensions or other tricks that I need to use to get an App Icon to look reasonable?

I've seen several questions similar to this, but no difinitive answer and cannot believe this is acceptable OR that I'm the only one experiencing the issue.  Any help is very much appreciated since involvement with Apps is often a Power BI users first interaction and to have it look so pathetic is a bad start.

Web Portal refresh is giving error: We cannot convert the value "[Table]" to type Table

$

I am trying to refresh my dataset on the web portal, but anytime I schedule a refresh or try refresh now, it returns the error: We cannot convert the value "[Table]" to type Table

The file refreshed fine everytime in the pbix file, but never works once it is published. It uses an excel file from a SharePoint site and a query from an Oracle database.  I have experimented with changing the security levels for both of the sources but haven't had any luck. I have also tried taking the file down, then republishing, but still no luck.

Here is a screenshot of what I am getting:

Thanks in advance for the help!

Create dataset that can be edited by organiztaion

$

I'd like to know if the following scenario is possible:

  1. Create a dataset from an Oracle database
  2. Publish this dataset to PBI Service and schedule a refresh
  3. Allow permitted users to build reports that all point back to that dataset

The main goal is to be able to create datasets that we can refresh and push out to select users. Then, have those users be able to build reports off of that datasets and have up to date data.

We don't want to give anyone direct access to the data source as it would be too complex to build that security into the backend and the users will only need a specific subset of that available data.
