Role Based Security in Power Bi Dashboard

$

We are having a use case where we need to display near real-time information on Power BI.

So we are using logic Apps to push data into the Power Bi Dashborads from an Oracle DB table. the logic app  uses the Power BI Connector to add rows to the Power Bi Dashboard.

But the ask is that the Dashboards need to display only the data specific to the users organization.

It seems that we have to create separate dashboards/Power BI Apps for different organizations to segregate the data but this will increase the maintenance effort.

Can you please help with a better approach?

NPGSQL in Gateway Server Not being recognized

I Installed the latest npgsql 3.2.3 in the enterprise gateway

However when i create a PostGres Data Source  i get this error. Is  there any other step required for the gateway to recognize the existance of the client?

Desktop vs. Web Filled Map

Hi team,

Question:  Can anyone tell me what may be going wrong here?

I ran into a problem today with a difference between BI Desktop and BI as a Service (web).  The filled map works perfectly in the desktop version, but behaves strangely when uploaded to the service.

Details:

- All data imported into a single table (regions and states)

- Bubble map acts as a counter for density of orders, also adjusts when region is clicked

Problem:

- Filled maps regions stop working when uploaded as a service

- images below show the problem (top is desktop version of the filled map, bottom is the web service version)

Difficulties Renewing Pro Subscription

Hi there,

One of my team members has finished his free 60 day Pro trial, and we're having some difficulties renewing his subscription.

From what I've read online, we need to navigate to the Office 365 admin centre > Billing > Subscriptions. However I don't see a 'Billing' link. I googled this and found what I think is the Billing link (https://portal.office.com/AdminPortal/Home#/billoverview) but when I try to access this link, I get the following error:

You don’t have permission to access this page or perform this action.

Power BI and groups ownership without membership

$

tl; dr ... why must I be a member of a group that I own to publish reports to it?

We have Azure AD and can create a group using "dynamic user" membership type with a query referencing the "reports to" from AD. We then see that the manager and her direct reports are members of the group, this is expected behavior. The Group Type for this group is "Office" the Membership type is  "Dynamic". I am the owner of the group, I am not in the members. From PowerBI Desktop I cannot publish to this workspace.

Groups that I created with explicit membership through portal.powerbi.com using the "Create app workspace" button are listed in the Azure portal as Group Type = "Office" and Membership Type = "Assigned". I am both the owner and a member. From PowerBI I can publish to this workspace.

Due to the sensitive nature of our data, I need to be able to push content to workspaces. I do not want to be a member of each group/workspace, but I do want to privilege of membership. For the Dynamically generated membership group, I am able to see all the shared application, but not PowerBI.

We will have too many groups for me to be a member of each - also, I do not report to the manager of each group. This would require manual intervention adding me to each group.

Am I looking at the interaction between Azure groups and PowerBI wrong? Is there another automated way to achieve this? Or is this a gap? Maybe Power BI (still) only recognized O365 groups and the Azure dynamic membership group doesn't exist there (it's not a timing thing, this group has existed for weeks)?

Thanks for any insight, ideas, suggestions or solutions!

<edited to add> I created another group via Azure, enabled Office features and chose to Assign members. From the group list, I cannot see a difference between those that I created in O365 and Azure - they're both Office/Assigned. I do not see this group in my list of workspaces when publishing from Power BI Desktop. The Dynamic user assignment doesn't seem to be the issue.

<edited to add> I thought I would test that it's all about the fact I am only an owner in the Azure created group and both an owner and member in the O365 created group by removing my membership from the O365 group - I cannot leave the group as I am the owner. In O365 ownership creates automatic membership.

Your data source cannot be refreshed because the credentials are invalid

I have created a report and installed personal gateway on my system. I am extracting data from SQL Server, its working fine when I refresh in Power BI Desktop version but not in Power BI Online. I am getting error in my data credentials, which is the same credentials I use on SQL Server. Do I need to update it anywhere else as well. What changes should I make.?

If I use the other option, other than basic authorization i.e. WindowsWithoutImpersonation, it solves the credential error problem but still doesn't refresh.

Combining tables causing refresh to fail in Power BI Service

$

Background

I have some excel files hosted in on-premise sharepoint folder.  There is one file for each country, and the contents of each file are the same.  I want to combine the contents into a single table.  In order to enable the gateway to refresh the data, I need to create individual queries for each file, using the "Web" data connector type.  If I do this for each file, without combining the data, it works fine, and I can refresh the datasource in the Power BI Service (using the gateway).

Problem

As soon as I combine the files into a single table (using Table.Combine), the refresh fails, giving me the super helpfull error "There was an error in the data gateway.".

According to the recent "Planning a PowerBI Enterprise Deployment" whitepaper published by Chris Webb, complex M queries can cause issues with data refresh.  But I wouldn't have thought that a simple Table.Combine would be considered complex.

Has anyway experienced a similar problem?  Is there a workaround any knows of?

External consultants

Hi All.

We are a MSP and we are about to start using an external consultant group to help with our clients PowerBI requirements.

I need this external consultant group to be able to create dashboards for us. If i add each consultant as a member to our powerbi workspace, should they be able to create the dashboards as needed? or what would be the best process to allow them to do the work for us?

Sharing reports to organization and external users

Hello,

I am currently creating PBI reports and dashboards with a company information about its sales, employees, etc. (sensitive data), and once I deliver it to them, I will have two different type of users:

  1. Employees of the organization, that has a Office 365 account, but no a PBI Pro. Will be able to see all the data of part of it depending on the group they belong to (for which I will need to implement RLS security, I assume).
  2. External users of the company without neither Office 365 account nor PBI Pro.

Which is the best approach for this? Since it is sensitive data, I can not publish it to web and make it Public, and the report sharing option in PBI requires PRO account for every viewer; and only I have the Pro account to work on Desktop and then publish the reports.

Request to Restricting Access to specific IP Range for Data Gateway

Just wanted to check again with you if you have any advise regarding the below? My customer is a huge SAP shop who is interested in doing all analytics through PowerBI on top of SAP, however currently they would not allow connections to PowerBI directly through FQDN. I have shared the full list of Azure Data Centers IPs however they would not accept it either as they need narrowed down range of IPs for the gateway to communicate with PowerBI.

Your help is highly appreciated.

True/False showing as numerical in web

Hi,

I have reports summarising Dynamics 365 data and fields with TRUE/FALSE values are now showing as blank in web reports. It seems that the web is reporting all related fields as no content because the filter is now numeric, all values online are 0 or -1.

For example, if field1 is filtered to show all TRUE:

Desktop: TRUE = 1000

Website: (-1) = 1000 and TRUE = 0

Anyone having this issue?

licensing

Hi there,

Can someone please advise as to the following statement which was released on the 3rd May 2017 ...

"Free users will benefit from access to all data sources, higher workspace storage limits, and higher refresh and streaming rates. These changes will be effective June 1."

Does this mean that standard Office 365 users who have the Free Power BI license structure will be able to access reports that utilise an on-premises data-gateway to return the source datasets ? Up until now, I have had to purchase Pro Licenses for any consumers of my reports.

Kind Regards,

Tim

Moving content to a new Power BI Account

$

Hello all,

So I have a customer who has a lot of Power BI content that has been built in a pro account that is used by their organization.  This pro account has been damaged through domain changes and it is not reliable at the moment and I am not sure I trust this account for a production environment even if I get it working properly again.

Is there a way to migrate all the Power BI content (datasets, reports, dashboards) into a new account and make that the new pro shared account.  Essentially I need to backup and restore the account content, and it is too late for the old adage of build everyhing in Power BI desktop and use that to manage it as my user has hundreds of hours invested building these reports and dashboards.

Thanks.

Hi,

my colleague created a new report and published a dashborad and shared it with me. The data source is an on premise ssas tabular cube. he craeted teh gateway and all necessary data connection and he can work from hi power bi account.

Both of us have a pro account.

After he shares with me the dashborad i can't see the data i get the error:

Couldn't load the schema for the database model

You don't have permission to view this report because the owner has set row-level security (RLS) on the data model. Please contact the report owner.

Now on the analasys server there is no RLS, both him and myself are administrator, why can't i see teh data? do i also need to configure the getway on my account? he did in his acocunt a mapping to my user for that dat source, we my active directory and power bi useranames are not the same so we did teh changes in mapping. How does power bi connect to my username , there was no place where i was asked to put in my password? i understand that it users the credentials from teh ownber, but if so why can't i see teh data?

thanks!

On-Premises data gateway (Personal) installation/configuration errors

Hello,

I am having problems re-installing and configuring my on-premises data gateway (Personal).

After noticing an error with my Gateway, I decided to uninstall the application from my server as I wanted to upgrade to the latest version.  I downloaded the installation file within the Power BI app itself.

When I am installing the software it informs me that I already have an on-premises data gateway (Personal) running on another machine, which I do not seem to have.  I have the option to select Continue to take ownership and after a short while I get the below error message:-

Status Code 'BadRequest' error code 'DM_GWPIPELINE_GATEWAY_CANCELLATIONORTIMEOUTERROR'.

Ensure "{0}" is running in the Services Control Panel

When I log into 365 into the Power BI app in Settings - Gateway Settings I can see the below error:-

'DM_GWPIPELINE_CLIENT_GATEWAYUNREACHABLE'.

I have tried rebooting the server and re-starting the installation process however I still get the above error messages.

If anyone can offer any advice or provide further information that would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

How to publish only a filtered dataset/report to PowerBI service?

$

I have a report with several hundred thousand rows from a database connection.  However I want to publish only a subset of rows based on specific filter criteria.   Is there a way to set the filter in Power BI desktop and publish only the filtered data set to Power BI service?

p.s: I tried to publish with report/visual filters and the entire data set is getting published to PBI Service.

Dashboards, Workspaces, and Shares, oh my!

Hi Folks,

I created an "App Workspace" but not going to "publish" the app. It's a workspace for people to view reports. However, while I need to add "Members" to the workspace, I also have row-level security on some reports.

Is it possible somewhere for a report in a workspace to NOT be visible if someone doesn't have access to it? They can still see the report, but it comes up as "X" on all of the visuals. I just don't want them to see it at all.

Is it one of those things where I should just have multiple workspaces? I'm just trying to minimize the whole "workspace" thing. Is there a better way to do this?

I also just found out that when a member of a workspace is only "read-only" that they can't pin to their own dashboards. I wanted to empower them to create their own dashboards in their own workspace, is this not possible?

Many thanks!
