Allow user to show or hide columns on report visual

Hello!

Is there a way to give the option to the user to hide columns they do not want to see in a published report? I have a report table visual that has a LOT of columns, but I would like to explore for way that the end user can pick and chose the columns that best fit their analysis.

Analyze In Excel is suddenly producing ODC file instead of XLSX

When trying to download an SSAS Cube that is loaded in Power BI Service, we would generally have users use the Analyze in Excel functionality. This used to download an .xlsx file, and users had no issue. Suddenly, we are noticing that it is downloading it as an .odc file. when it opens in Excel, we get the usual warning about "Microsoft Office ahs identified a potential security concern." which is what we also had with .xlsx files. However, when we now click "Enable" we instead get a warning box that says "Unable to obtain a list of tables from the data source." When clicking OK, it just shuts down the Excel file.

We are trying to determine what has caused this suddenly, and how to solve this issue. Any thoughts from the community?

Can Power BI handle my needs?

Today my company has a few hundred reports in PBIRS (2017) and a couple hundred in Power BI (Pro).  What I would like to be able to do is migrate all the PBIRS reports to Snowflake and Power BI, and have Power BI send out the daily subscriptions that PBIRS sends out today.  I would also like to be able to direct all Power BI users to a data warehouse in Snowflake for ease of use and to ensure all analysts are following the same procedures to get data.  It would also be nice if we didn't have to buy a Pro license for every Power BI user.  Can Power BI Premium do all that?  Do I need the "capacity" model?  If so I don't know what "per capacity" means on the pricing page.

Paginated Report Extracts

Hi All,

I have built a paginated report connecting to a PowerBI dataset and published it to service without any issue. I have a text column which has values like 1234, 0001, 0123 etc.,. The published report shows the values as is. Whenever I extract this report to CSV, the text column is converted to Number and leading 0's are dropped. The resultant file shows 1234,1,123 values. Is there any way to avoid the leading 0 error?

Thanks in advance.

Not seeing any users in usage metrics - only my own

I have about 15 people in my organization with read only access actively using a report but the usage metrics only show my own interactions. I've screen shared and watched these others log in... is there something I'm missing?

Every user was added by providing direct access with an email message. We are currently on a Pro Trial.

Please let me know what I'm missing, this is a huge piece of our evaluation!

Switch Dataset of Existing Power BI Report

$

I'm finding that what I would like to do isn't possible, but I just want to confirm:

We have a workspace that had a single report with a cached dataset. Someone made a few copies of that report in Power BI desktop, changed some of the visuals within the resulting reports, and then uploaded those copies into the same workspace. This resulted in three reports that point to three cached datasets that are actually the same dataset (schema wise). I want to update the connection so that all three reports point to the same Power BI dataset. If I do that with Power BI desktop and point the file to the dataset in the service (Live Connection) and then upload the report into the workspace, a duplicate copy of the report is created (It's my understanding that two reports with the same name can exist in a workspace if they have different data connection types, e.g. one with a cached dataset and the other with a live connection). The issue is that I can't publish the new version of these reports because people in our organization might already have a bookmark to the current version of the report and the existing report and duplicated report have different ids within the url.

Is it possible to change the connection of an existing Power BI report from a cached dataset to a shared dataset within the Power BI service? Or, does anyone know of a way to change the connection type (cached vs. live connection) of a report and then overwrite an existing report with the same name in the Power BI service?

Thanks,

Eric

Analyze in Excel - how to get a Table Visual?

$

I'm new at "Analyze in Excel".

The goal I have is to take a table visual, and replicate it in Excel. It needs to be updated as the data updates. In Power BI, the table visual looks like this:

SalesPerson    Office     Department      Total Sales

Doe, J.            Tokyo     Accounting       $120,000

Smith, B.        Toronto   Compliance      $101,000

Ng, F.             Chicago   Technology      $88,000

The Total Sales is the sum of all the Sales lines for a time period. This is a SUM() measure.

The Office and the Department are properties of the SalesPerson - i.e. Doe is in Tokyo in Accounting, Smith is in Toronto in Compliance.

Is there a way to use "Analyze in Excel" to get this table into Excel? Excel is requiring I use a Pivot Table, and then it seems I have to summarize by rows, which I don't want to do - it makes lots of extra rows with zeros - and it's not possible to see anymore which salesperson is in which department and which office.

Thank you!

Can't display the visual Error when using Clusters

Hi community!

I'm facing the following error when trying to use a Cluster that I've generated in PBI Desktop using the "automatically find clusters" functionality:

iperezlemme_0-1627515776600.png

Trying to create a visual in Power BI Desktop (July 2021 version) using that same cluster, everything works fine.

My dataset is an Hybrid one, though the cluster I've created, is based only on an Import mode entity. I've tried deleting all the other tables, making it an Import model, but the error persisted.

Hope someone can help!

Gateway DataSource problem with SQLServer on Virtual Machine

Hi all,

hopefully someone can help. My SQL Server is running on my Hyper-V VM.

I've connected the data source successfully with the Desktop Dashboard and been able to use my DB fine, since however I've published to Services and now I can't open the report because the Gateway isn't set up.

In doing this I keep getting error: 26

I've of course researched and tried a lot out, ports are all open, firewall is down and pinging from host to vm is ok. SQLServer is open to remote access and as far as I can tell it should work, however I keep getting the following error:

Status code:400
Error Code:DMTS_PublishDatasourceToClusterErrorCode
venabo-gateway:SQL Server connection failed
Underlying error code:-2146232060
DM_ErrorDetailNameCode_UnderlyingHResult:-2146232060
DM_ErrorDetailNameCode_UnderlyingNativeErrorCode:-1

I'd really appreciate some help in this matter. I can't seem to find any instructions on specifically setting this up from a hyper-v vm either.

Thanks in advance.

Dataflow Silently Truncating Text to 1023 Characters

Hi,

As the title suggests, I have a problem with my dataflow truncating the text in a cell to 1023 characters. The non-truncated text length when the datasource is loaded in Power BI Desktop is ~1,800 characters.

The column is a text type.

The query is folding to the datasource. The datasource is a SQLite .db file read by an ODBC driver via a gateway. I can't find any indication as to why this truncation is happening.

Hello everyone,
this is my first time developing an application. My company would like to integrate power bi into an angular application with java backend. I would like advice from you on guides and tools if possible. I also tried to develop an application with Visual Studio and I got the access token through the application id and the power bi searches. I would also like to do this with Angular. Thank you for your time and I hope you can help me.

dynamic data source - REST API

I'm using M query mentioned below to fetch VM's in an Azure Subscription using REST API from Virtual Machines - List All - REST API (Azure Compute) | Microsoft Docs.

Learnt that this is a dynamic data source and does not support automatic refresh after publishing it to power bi service.

let
    iterations = 10,
    url =
     "https://management.azure.com/subscriptions/< subscription >/providers/Microsoft.Compute/virtualMachines?api-version=2021-03-01",

    FnGetOnePage =
     (url) as record =>
      let
       Source = Json.Document(Web.Contents(url)),
       data = try Source[value] otherwise null,
       next = try Source[nextLink] otherwise null,
       res = [Data=data, Next=next]
      in
       res,

    GeneratedList =
     List.Generate(
      ()=>[i=0, res = FnGetOnePage(url)],
      each [i]<iterations and [res][Data]<>null,
      each [i=[i]+1, res = FnGetOnePage([res][Next])],
      each [res][Data])
    in
     GeneratedList

Tried to use 'RelativePath' and 'Query'. This url does not return all results from the subscription. Not sure what I'm missing here.

let
    iterations = 10,
    url =
     "https://management.azure.com/subscriptions/< subscription >/providers/Microsoft.Compute/virtualMachines?api-version=2017-12-01",

    FnGetOnePage =
     (url) as record =>
      let
       Source = Json.Document(Web.Contents("https://management.azure.com/subscriptions/< subscription >/providers/Microsoft.Compute/",
[RelativePath="virtualMachines?",
Query=[#"api-version"="2021-03-01"]])), data = try Source[value] otherwise null, next = try Source[nextLink] otherwise null, res = [Data=data, Next=next] in res, GeneratedList = List.Generate( ()=>[i=0, res = FnGetOnePage(url)], each [i]<iterations and [res][Data]<>null, each [i=[i]+1, res = FnGetOnePage([res][Next])], each [res][Data]) in GeneratedList

 Still trying to find my feet in Power BI. Hence seeking help.

Thanks,

SV

Access to shared dataset

Hi all,

I face an issue trying to share a report using a shared dataset:

I built a report in a workspace A using a shared dataset located in a workspace B. I am the administrator of the workspace A, and a "Member" on the workspace B. I had no difficulties buidling the new report on Power BI desktop and connecting to the shared dataset. However, when I publish it on my workspace A, all the viewers of the workspace A can't see the visuals using the workspace B data. They currently don't have access to the workspace B.

Is it mandatory to add them on the workspace B as viewers or is there an alternative solution ? It is quite a huge number of people, therefore not adding them one by one would be highly preferable.

All users are using Pro licences.

Thank you for your help,

Clement.

Secured access to reports in a premium capacity workspace

Hello,

We have a premium capacity workspace, where a set of people can publish reports. These users have Contributor and/or Member access to this Workspace. With this access each user can see all the reports that are published in this Workspace.

I want to restrict the access to users in such a way that each user can view only his/her report and only Workspace Administrator can see all the report. How this can be achieved?

Thanks in advance!

Retrieving an IdentityBlob token for a specific user

We are embedding a Power BI report using the embed for your customers application process

The RLS has been set up on the Azure side but we are struggling to generate an IdentityBlob token for a user in the python code.

IdentityBlob: a blob for specifying the identity. Only supported for datasets with Direct Query connection to SQL Azure

Can anyone recommend a way of retrieveing the IdentityBlob using JSON / Python? Or direct to a website with this information?

Many thanks.

Embed Power BI on Sharepoint Online Access Error

Hi ,

I have added a Power BI Premium capacity backed App report in to Sharepoint Online Page using the MS documentation here.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-au/power-bi/collaborate-share/service-embed-report-spo

When the end user access the Sharepoint Online Page directly on its own in a browser,  they get an error message like this one below.  But if the same user opens another tab in browser and login to Power BI Service they are access the App and the Sharepoint Online embed report also works.

For Sharepoint Online Power BI Embedding Report , is uit must the user also login to Power BI Portal in order for them to see the Embed report ? Thanks
