Hey everyone, I am having troubles trying to schedule the refreshes on a PBI report in Fabric, that is connected to an ODBC of MongoDB Atlas

PabloUalett_0-1729285755794.pngPabloUalett_1-1729285826060.png

I have also downloaded & set the MS on-premise data gateway for the connector but is does not work.

MS Fabric and MS Purview integration

Hi Everyone,
Has anyone tried MS Purview integration with Fabric items. I did that but I noticed the assets that's getting identified does not included the delta tables residing in semantic model and even the csv files present in lakehouse are not identified. Even the lineage from one source to other is not captured.
Please help if anyone has success in identifying the delta table as assets from semantic models so I can further progress on cataloguing.

Thanks,
Pallavi

Historical Data Load in Power BI

I am getting 6 months data from Teradata as initial load. The data volume is around 1.7B and direct query is out of equation as we are mainly getting this data to have Q&A visual on top of it. Q&A only supports Import mode. I can't aggregate the data as well because the requirement is to have data at most granular level

Ofcourse 6months data as a single load is failing due to gateway out of memory issue

So is there a way I could split this into 6 mini batches (1 per month) and load the data batch by batch

I tried Incremental refresh with the following config

PowerRanger03_0-1729335759651.png

My data batches are below

 Start DateEnd Date
Batch A23/04/202422/05/2024
Batch B23/05/202421/06/2024
Batch C22/06/202421/07/2024
Batch D22/07/202420/08/2024
Batch E21/08/202419/09/2024
Batch F20/09/202419/10/2024

The problem with the above configuration is the first batch will be successful and the next one doesn't because as per the config the only data after 19/10 is getting loaded. I also want to remove the data older than 6 months

Hopefully I have clearly explained the problem, if not happy to clarify

Could you please guide me to resolve the problem ? Can I achieve this with Incremental refresh or Is there any other better method

Appreciate your insights

Thanks and Regards,

PR

I am trying to setup Power BI with Snowflake as back data source.

I have a usecase to add/remove columns in data source dynamically (less frequent but possible).

I want my semantic data model to be udpated with column updates, is there a way to automate this? ( I do not want to do it manually)

If there is any sample script or any other setup avaialble would appreciate if can be shared!

Thanks for helping!

powerbi published report and authentication to SharePoint

I have a case in which a team has a powerbi dahboard that pull data from many fexcel files stored on mulitple Sharepoint sites (in the samne tenant).  Right now the authenticatio nto sharepoin is using a regualr users name and password.  The issue is with MFA etc the crednetials need to be refreshed to get a new Oauth token every 14 days and it the perosn is on leave this also becimes a issue.

My first thought was Service principals however the compeny deveoping the dahsbaord claims the issue with Power Platform, including BI, and its SharePoint integration, is that it still does not support an Azure Service Principal as an auth method.

As they are asling for a generic account and remove all the seucifty options etc.  Usual stuff.

Firstly I cannot find any info on the service principal being supported or not.  These tools have bene around for many years seem to me this would have been something address.

Can anyone help point me to where this apparent lakc of support is documented or if this is not actuslly the fact and they can be used is ther ea guide on hwo to setup a SP and add this to a report when buiding it in PowerBi desktop?

Thanks.

How to share power bi report to collegues

Hi all.

Created power bi report for organisational purpose and published to premium capacity workspace. I have to share that report to my colleagues around 11 members who are having power bi free licences. Now not sure that how to share the report?

1. Do I need to  click on share option (which is present at the top) and give my colleagues mail id

or 2. copy the browser url and have to share with them

or 3. I need to click on file, embed report and choose website or portal.

Or 4. Clicking on chat on teams option and give their mail id.

Is there any differences between these methods. Is there any restriction will be there for user level among these methods based on permissions. If yes, can you discuss it. Which one is correct and which one shall I use in my case

DMTS_OAuthTokenRefreshFailedError when connect to databricks

My PBI dashboard is connecting to a Databricks data source.

I got below error about every 10 days when refreshing a model from a daily schedule.  I have to reset the Data source credentials to solve the issue.

I use OAuth2 and privacy level set to 'Organizational' when setting the Data source credentials.

I am not sure why the issue happens every 10 days?

The error

Power BI Cloud dashboards redirection

Hi Team,

I have a sceanrio where I donot want to embed few Power BI dashboards hosted in Power BI service , rather want to paste the links of these dashboards in another web portal. The idea is when users will view the web portal, they will see these Power BI dashboards links and on clicking on those it will redirect to the actual Power BI dashboards.

Will pasting the dashboard url within the code base of the web portal work or there is any other way to this? How will the authentication and authorization of users work ?

Powerbi Dataflows not showing on Desktop

Hi,

Im having some troubles with the PowerBI service dataflows. I've been working on a dashboard for some time now which gets all its data from the dataflows. When i started working this morning the refresh suddenly didn't work anymore on desktop, while on powerbi service the data is still correctly getting refreshed. I think my powerbi desktop has some sort of disconnect with the powerbi service platform, because when I went to add another data source suddenly I couldn't access my own workspaces anymore, while when in in PowerBI service everything still works as intendended. Does anyone have any ideas on how to solve this?

If i don't schedule refresh on the Data Warehouse in my workspace, does the Data Warehouse gets refreshed once the data flow connected to it has refreshed successfully?

im following this video to build historical data for usage metrics report but it seems that my data warehouse isn't refreshing although my data flow is already refreshed : Build Historical Data for Usage Metrics Report - Microsoft Fabric Way

Unable to disable Copy options in Power BI reports

Hi,

I'm trying to find out how to disable the "Copy" options in a table visual in a report in the PBI service, I've disabled every tenant option I can see that may be relevant, but a user can still select rows in a table visual, right-click "Copy" then select either value or selection.  They can then paste into Excel...

I've had a look for this issue and found this post which unfortunately didn't seem to solve the issue

extracting permissions from the service using powershell

Using the following powershell script I can extract user information and then use powerquery on the result to extract WORKSPACE level permissions. I wish to extract App level permissions and possibly permissions at dataset, report and dashboard levels.

Can this be done in powershell? Is it just a case of navigating to the collect URL? I have tried navigating to /reports and /dashboards and /apps but when I expand the users column, in powerquery, it always comes back blank.

Or is there an easier way of summarising and reporting all of the permissions at every object level (WS,app, dashboard, report, dataset)?

Change reports data source connection from PROD to UAT based on User

$

Dear All,

I have 100+ dashboards within my power bi service, they are all connected to Production DB.

The requirement is to have all these reports connected also to UAT DB, and the change from PROD to UAT should happen dynamically according to the user viewing the dashboards.

For example User A will Access all this 100 dashboards with PROD DB

While User B will Access all this 100 dashbaords with UAT DB

P.S: it will be impossible to replicate all this 100 dashboards again with a different connection.

P.S.: I have read about making the data source as parameter to change from Power BI Service, but I couldn't find a way to change it dynamically based on the user.

So, Is there any workaround for this challenge?

Regards,

Read permission role question

Hi,

I was reading the information on the following link (https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/connect-data/service-datasets-permissions), and something caught my attention. In the first note, it states:

"Granting Read permission without Build permission should not be relied upon to secure sensitive data. Users with Read permission, even without Build permission, are able to access and interact with data in the semantic model."

I’m curious about how a user with only Read permissions could access and interact with the semantic model. I figure that the Export Data setting is the only available option, but I'm not entirely sure. Could a user still access the semantic model even if the Export Data option is disabled?

Thanks in advance.

Semantic model data source after Dev to Prod deployment

Hi Everyone,

I have a 2 Power BI files (one acts as a semantic model and the other as the report/dashboard) that I have published in my dev environment.

I have now deployed the via Power BI deployment pipeline to de Prod environment.

My current issue is that the prod environment semantic model should connect to the production data source instead of the development data source.

I have trying going to Semantic model>settings>Gateway and cloud conections and there map to create a new conection, and while the new conection is created it is not assigned to the semantic model.

Can someone please give me a hand with this?

Many thanks

Automatic update of Direct Lake data has been disabled (Lakehouse)

Hey All, I'm at a loss and can't find anything on this topic specifically. So I have a lakehouse that I use to stage data that then moves through a medallion architecture. I keep getting this error emailed to me about the staging lakehouse:

We’ve disabled the automatic update of Direct Lake data for _0_Staging_Tables in the __L Data workspace due to retry failures. Power BI will no longer detect changes to the data in OneLake. Check the refresh history for additional error information.

I've truncated the lakehouse and workspace names. I've seen similar error messages for semantic models using direct lake but this isn't a semantic model - it's a lakehouse. I'm also not sure where the setting would be to turn on/off the automatic update like we see in responses for similar issues with semantic models.

This has been going on for a while, it's weird - it'll email me a bunch of these messages then stop for a few days then kick up again. Now, I do have a lot of tables in this series of data processing activities. And the staging lakehouse is the target for all staged tables (where I put data before writing them to the appropriate data warehouse). So I'm thinking it's getting used too much and that's causing some processing errors.

I don't really use this lakehouse to feed data to end users so it's not a critical issue. It's more that the emails are annoying and I can't figure out what I'm supposed to do with the information/how to fix it.

Does anyone know what causes this? Anyone know how to fix it?

Turn off Insights button on Power BI visuals

There is a new functionality on Power BI that appears when the report is published online, called Insights. You can see it in two places, as shown in this microsoft article (https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/create-reports/insights#considerations-and-limitations😞

JonatasAlmeida_1-1729516189295.png

My question is: there is a way to stop this from showing in the reports?

It doesn't give any insights for my reports and i'm cool with that. But it's not good when my end users click and don't find anything useful.

PowerBI Connection via a Gateway Offline

$

Hi,

Since Friday evening 18/10/2024, our connection to a server via our gateway has been 'Offline', the message I get when trying to connect is :

'Unable to update connection credentials. Logging into Sql server failed. Possible reasons for this error include an invalid authentication mode, a missing login in Sql server, a login from an untrusted domain or a problem contacting the domain controller for the authentication request.'

I've:

- Updated the gateway to the latest version.

- Restarted the gateway

- Tried different credentials

- Tried creating a new connection in the gateway

The gateway server can be pinged from a desktop and the server with the database on can be pinged from the gateway.

Any ideas what to try next?

Regards

David
