Streamline how data is collected

Hello

 

I am curreny using Power BI, I use various data sourecs for example from your box standard folder loaction which looks at excel or CSV files, to using several SQL Views to collect data for my reports. 

 

I know Power BI is able to access many formats/sites to get information but I was wonder if there was a way to allow a user to send or present new data to PowerBI which then triggers an update to a report/dahsboard etc.    I am desinging a finacial report which relies on our accounts providng a revised a budegt amount, this will be a regular occurance and from more than one user.  Is there a means for a person or Power BI to acknwoldge there is new data without me having to refresh that report?

 

The majority of my data is accessed by looking at a local drive, should I be asking about something simailr to Azure service maybe? 

I have no knowledge in this area unforatunately so forgive me if I am not quoting the right techincal terms here.

 

I am just wanting to make the user imput very streamline and go unnoticed, rather than having load then refresh a folder or file to allow a report to be updated.

 

Is there a way to automate this process or steps?

Dataflow refreshes timing out, and other errors

Since 19 Aug there have been refresh failures in several of our dataflows. First these were down to some sort of issue with credentials for the On Premises Gateway connection to Oracle.

Since that was resolved there are different errors, (I think, only on dataflows that use linked dataflows).

 

The first error was "Error: Received error payload from gateway service with ID 2460794: error: could not create the encoder with status 1. Request ID: e866febd-3[...]"

 

Also

"Error: The handle is invalid Request ID: c4982876[...]"

"Error: Evaluation resulted in a stack overflow and cannot continue. Request ID: f7df622d[...]"

"Error: The operation is timed out. Request ID: e640b79b[...]"

 

There are different errors at different times, and not all dataflows are failing to refresh.

 

Editing one particular dataflow, it keeps showing the error "The operation is timed out." on the screen instead of the data preview.

 

Is anyone else having problems?

Office 365 group not creating a Power BI workspace

Hi,

I created a office 365 group from outlook, it created the Sharepoint and Teams site, but when i come to Power BI I dont find this workspace. What is it that i'm missing here? 

 

All these time, the Power BI workspace would create as part of Office 365 group.

Power BI sensitivity labels disable some Excel features in the exported file

Hello to everybody,

The Excel file exported from Power BI  and protected with data sensitivity label has some of the features disabled (e.g. Sparklines) and ‘Export’ permission not allowed.  Could you please advise if and how this behaviour can be changed so that Sparklines and other Excel features are not disabled in Excel files exported from Power BI reports protected with sensitivity label?

 

For example, the default ‘Confidential’ label applied to Power BI report will cause the exported Excel file have the ‘Sparklines’ feature disabled and ‘Export’ permission not allowed .

If the same ‘Confidential’ label is applied to the document within Excel, the ‘Sparklines’ feature is available and ‘Export’ permission is not blocked.

Power BI Dataset using multiple gateways

Hello,
Is it possible for a Power BI dataset to refresh data sources from multiple gateways?
In my client's company, there are several branches.
each has its own SQL server and database, but all with the same scheme.

successfully, we have built a power bi reports for each branch individually,
branches managers can't and shouldn't see other branches data due to security reasons
Now the headquarter want to have a 'master report' contains all branches at one glance.
the problem is that Power BI service only supports a dataset to use one gateway.
any workarounds known for this?

User Metrics model not Refreshing

Online Refresh Fails due to adding Index Column

Hello Community,

I have an online refresh failure where we were able to identify the root cause and fix it.  However, I believe it to be a bug and wanted to know if anyone else has experienced this.  

 

Background:

We have Premium Capacity and leverage a data gateway. 

 

The Issue:

We leverage the technique of creating surrogate keys for all of our dimensions and then use merge statements to 'join' the dimensions back to the fact table where we then only display the surrogate key created.  We have been using this technique for almost a year and have never experienced an issue until now.

 

The surrogate key created on the dimesnion tables is nothing more than the Index Column and we completely use the GUI to do the build.  

 

The solution refreshes fine locally, no issues.

 

However, when we publish it online, we get errors and it doesnt refresh.  Reading thru the cryptic error messages we determined that the error is ocurring on Index Column creation.  The gist of the error is that it refers to the Index Column step indicating that a function was pass 5 parameters when it was expecting 2. 

 

 Reading thru the Mcode we realize that PowerBI is now inserting an additional step when creating the Index Column, it is changing the data type to Int64.Type.  This change is causing the issue, in bold below.

 

= Table.AddIndexColumn(#"Trimmed Text", "Index", 1, 1, Int64.Type)

 

We are not sure when Microsoft introduced this change, but we are certain that it was a recent change because since we have leveraged this technique for a year we can go back to prior builds and see that using the GUI Index Column use to only produce this Mcode
= Table.AddIndexColumn(#"Trimmed Text", "Index", 1, 1)

 

The Fix:

We modified the existing PBIX file, removing the Int64.Type reference from the Mcode, and the soltuion now refreshes online with no issue.

 

The Question:

Has anyone else experienced this or possibly explain what has changed and why this is occuring?  We will be creating a ticket with Microsoft as we do not believe that using the GUI to create an Index should cause any errors when refreshing online.

Subscription recipient query dependent

Hello,

 

I am building a report which contains information for a subset of people in my organization, however, not everyone in the organization needs to see the report, and those that need to see the report will change. Is there a way to change the recipients of the report based on the output of the query and the dataset?

 

An example might be to congratulate the top 10 sellers of a particular product if the dataset contained the email address of the top seller?

Subscription for BI Reports

Hello, I have a BI subscription currently set up to be sent out weekly. But when it sends out, the screen shot within the body of the email shows no data and has old dates from back in decemeber instead of the most recent data. Even after a refresh is performed. 
any ideas?

End Users Posting and Exchanging Comments via Reports

Hi

My end users would like to start adding comments to shared BI reports.  However, they are reporting once they click on the 'comments' box, the comment window panel opens but no option to post.
As a report creator, do I need to grant permissions for end users to use the comments or is it on by default?

Scheduled refresh fails

Hi,

 

My scheduled refresh suddenly fails (after it might have worked well for a while) giving the following error:

when going to the diagnostics tab in the gateway i get this error when trying to test it:

"Failed to connect to netrwork"

 

If i relaunch the gateway the issue is fixed until the next time.

Polling Expression Format

Hi community,

 

Anyone here has already experienced to override the polling expression when having incremental refresh and cdc enabled?

I've tried to update the original expression:

By replacing the source query (#Main Fact) to an alternate query containing basically the latest modification date of each partition. This query is filtered by parameters RangeStart/RangeEnd to make sure it returns only one row per partition call. I have saved this with success through an XMLA call with SSMS.

 

Then, when running a refresh from powerbi.com, the refresh got stuck for 10/15 minutes and nothing happens. No sql query is sent against the server. After a while, I'm getting the following error:

 

COM error: Microsoft.Data.Mashup, Value cannot be null. Parameter name: json.

 

Any experience on this? idea/suggestion?

 

Additionally, when profiling the sql queries sent against the server, I have noticed (with the original pollingExpression setup) there are queries with top 1000 clause that are sent to the server, one per partition. Any idea why such queries are sent to the server ? Note this happens even when refreshing from powerbi.com, this is not related to the schema evaluation happening in PowerBI Desktop.

Hi  My organisation has enterprise licence so all developer comes under "Premium Capacity " , but how we can share the report with end user ( - Business who wants to consume the data , within the organisation).  O365 admin advised to have pro licence for each user which is $10 each month . has anyone faced the similar problem ?

Sharing Usage Metrics with users who are not workspace members

Hello,

 

I have some usage metrics for my users in a particular workspace. However, there is no "Share" button on the resulting report. I have shared other reports with users using this shared button and they appear in the recipient's "Shared with Me" even if they are not members of the workspace. Is there a way to share & to enable view permission for these users?

"Credentials are required to connect to the File source."

Suddenly today I started getting this error on the service refresh for local files refreshing through the gateway.

Refresh on Desktop works fine but on service get this error.

I have tried updating the gateway, restarting the gateway, deleting/re-publishing the datasets but nothing is working.

 

Can someone please give me some suggestions?

Not sure if this is a known issue at the moment because it makes no sense as nothing has been changed and other datasets on the same gateway are refreshing fine.

Optimize report loading time in Power BI Service

Hi Guys,

 

I would like to seek for suggestion to optimize the report loading time in Power BI service.
In my report, I have charts as below and data source is using import.

  • 5 Slicer
  • 2 Bullet Chart
  • 1 Table
  • 17 Card
  • 11 KPI indicator

Currently my report loading time is around 17 seconds.

May I know is there any way to minimize the report loading time, perhaps can optimize to below 10 seconds?

Dashboard Text Box Options are Lame

PBI Team, you really need better options for text boxes for dashboards. 

Now, all of my text that I had carefully selected at 36pt has suddenly shrunk to 20pt for my box size. There's no options for padding, or wrapping, or background color, or background image. We use these text boxes to label our dashboards, so it's nice to have something that's easy to edit while modifying dashboards. My only other option is to use an image which takes more time. Any advice or work on this would be appreciated.

Power Bi Gateway Installation

Hi : I have got Power Bi Pro license under my work account. I need to install Power Bi Gateway for establishing connection from Power Bi Service to my on-prem sql server (work).

I am not an admin for my Work PC. My company policy doesn't allow non-IT professionals to be the administrator of their PC. When my IT dept assist me in installing the gateway in my PC, it doesn't work.

Becaue while downloading the gateway, Power Bi ask to input account holder user ID and passwords. When I put my Power Bi account details and I am not the admin of my PC, it doesn't work.

What would be the work around?  Would the following work:

I will get one of the IT officers to install the gateway in my PC. When downloading the gateway. Power Bi service will ask for Power Bi account detail. Even though my IT officer may not havy a Pro licence, he/she can create a Power Bi account under his name and install the gateway.

After finish installing the gateway, my IT officer can provide  the admin right to me of that Power BI Gateway. Through this admin rights, would I able to establish connection from Power Bi service to sql server on -prem?
