Visual not rendering in the service

$

Good afternoon,

Is anyone having a problem with some types of visuals not rendering in the service?

I have one scatter chart visual in particular (default PBI; not custom) with problems (since Friday more or less). I'm getting a message stating "Cannot load the data for this visual". (I have tried both on Edge and Chrome, not that I think that has anything to do with loading the data...).

It was working fine a week ago and the visual renders beautifully in Desktop.

(Another scatter chart however renders without a hitch, so it's something affecting this one in particular)

Any ideas on how to troubleshoot it?

Thanks!

Power BI Login Loop

Hi,

I am trying to install the Power BI Gateway. The last step of the installation requies logging in as a user. I am unable to log in and the logs show the following error:

Inner Exception #0) Microsoft.PowerBI.DataMovement.GatewayCommon.ADAuthenticationException: Failed to sign in. Please verify your credentials and try again. ---> Microsoft.Identity.Client.MsalServiceException: AADSTS500014: The service principal for resource 'https://analysis.windows.net/powerbi/api' is disabled. This indicate that a subscription within the tenant has lapsed, or that the administrator for this tenant has disabled the application, preventing tokens from being issued for it.

I then tried to log into the Power BI website with my user account and the login process just goes round in a loop. I am able to authenticate but I just go round in a loop back to the authentication page again. If I try and create a new account using my username I get a message that I already have an account and then tries to log in again. It continues to go round in a loop.

I am an Azure administrator and have taken away the Power BI free trial license associated with my account as suggested in posts with a similar issue, however this has not fixed it.

I have tried with different browsers, In Private mode and on different clients but still have the same issue.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Ben

incremental dataset refresh on cosmos db

Hi,

i have following questions while implementing incremental dataset on a cosmos datasource in a power BI.

1. I have cheked on stored rows for last 5 years , and refresh rows in last 10 days, if currently i m having only 10 columns in a dataset(datasource is having almost 80 columns) and now user wants to see one more column (i e 11 column) in a report , will all the historical data get refreshed with this new column?

2.  If there will be  any changes in the dataset i-e added new calculated column or measure, or changed type or added a new step in a edit query, how it will work for a historical data?

If  wanted that all historical data also get refreshed with this new changes what will be the options?

If the dataset will be large then it will get timeout error if we try to reload all the data again, how to handle this?

Thanks,

Namita

Power BI App is not Updating when Reports have been updated

Hello,

I have looked through the forum and it seems some folks have had the same issue but I have not seen a resolve.

When I publish and update from my desktop Power BI to my reports, everything flows through and the report is updated where I have it shared, via powerbi.com and teams. However, the app does not update. I have physically go in and edit the app, then update.

Is this the standard or shouldn't the app update since it is directly lynced to the report I am updating?

Use Multiple Gateways for Single Power BI Report

Hi,

Here is my senerio. I have data sources across the globe. Some in a server farm across the country. Some here in the same building as me, etc. That being said, it makes sense for me to put a gateway near the different sources so that way data is being pushed and pulled further than it needs to be.

I have a report that refrenses data from a server farm across the counrty and the same report refrences data from a local server. How can I use the two different gateways to set up my scheduled refreshes?

If this is not possible, I have to admit this is a huge flaw in the service.

Anyone run into this?

Thank you

Create Dataset with datasource programatically

Hi,

I’m currently working on a project which requires me to export the Dataset from MicroStrategy Reports and create the same dataset in the Power BI.

I've tables & columns of MicroStrategy reports. Now, I need to programmatically create the dataset for every report in Power BI.

Already explored solutions

REST API:
Created a PUSH Dataset, but it lacks some features like
1. Creating calculated formulas
2. Connect the Push Dataset to SQL Server or any other DB
3. Max 75 Relationships per dataset

Gateways & Dataflows:
Created Gateways & Dataflows but once the dataset is created, we can only edit it manually but not through API as its not a PUSH Dataset.

MicroStrategy Connector for Power BI:
It exports the reports metadata directly rather than the underlying dataset.

Is there any possibility (or in the premium version) where I can create a dataset with tables, columns (calculated columns & measures), and their relationships programmatically, which can be imported in the Local Power BI Instance and can be edited in the future?

I'm still a beginner to the Power BI platform, please correct me if  I'm wrong.

Thanks

Monitor Premium capacities with the PBI Premium Capacity Metrics - CPU Highest Utilization Count

Hello All,

I have a couple of questions about PBI Premium Capacity Metrics app.

What is the sampling rate for the "CPU Highest Utilization Count"?

I cannot find this in documentation https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/admin/service-admin-premium-monitor-capacity

The description is the Number of times CPU the named capacity exceeded 80% of the thresholds in the past seven days.

In the example, the value is 990.  What is a Max, just trying to understand how to read this metric.

Thank you for the answers.

Power BI Desktop visual filter not showing the same results online

I am having an issue when clicking on a visual to filter another visual on the page is working differently on the desktop version than the online version published on our premium workspace.

It works as expected in the desktop version, however it only shows limited or no records in the second table in the online version.  I have validated that the filters are the same on both versions and all data is available without filters but one table visual is not showing the relevant results when filtering from the matrix by clicking on the visual.

I have not been able to recreate the issue in another report.  I have attached a couple screenshots showing the results of a filter online compared to the desktop version.  The top screenshot is showing the Desktop version result which is working as expected.  The second screenshot is showing the Online version result after the report is published to our workspace.  This report has worked fine in the past and only started this issue within the last couple weeks and no changes have been made to the report.  I have tried republishing the report to see if that corrected the issue but unfortunately it did not.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Power BI Reports Sharing

Creating a History table with a data flow

I have a JSON web query that pulls back a table of information.  (about 2400 rows).  This information does not have any date information in it.  I'm trying to keep a running history of what this data is daily.  I'm trying to do a refresh of the data once a day and add a date stamp to it when the query runs.  This works great but overwrites the data after each refresh, so it's not keeping the values from the previous days.  I've tried several workarounds where you use 2 tables and append the main table, which does not seem to work for me.  I think it may be because I'm using a calculated column for the date time stamp.  I have tried incremental refresh, but I get errors when I try to turn it on saying the query cannot be saved, with no other reason for the error.  I'm working in a premium workspace but from what I gather, incremental refresh works with pro accounts now also.  is this possible in Power BI?

Delete Azure Data Lake Storage connection on published report

I'm having troubles trying to remove a datasource within a published dataset. I'm using a Power Shell script along with PowerBI Rest API to do so. When I consume the Rest service it returns a 200 Http response but the datasource is never removed.

I don't know if I'm missing something or I'm just following the incorrect path.

By the way, I'm using a parameter to update the Azure Data Lake Storage Gen2 connection when promoting the report to another workspace.

I'm using this parameter as follows.

dflores_0-1592868534427.png

When I'm using PowerBI Actions along with some Power Shell scripts inside DevOps I'm able to update that parameter, but the problem is that after updating the parameter I see two Datasources sucessfully attached to the dataset but I will just be using one, when the refresh task comes in I'm having huge refresh times and some errors refered to overloaded memory.

Here is the power shell script I'm using to delete the unused datasource, but nothing happens with it.

#Login to PowerBI usgin a prompt Login-PowerBI # Script Variables $adlHostOld = "generaldevelopment.dfs.core.windows.net" $workspaceName = "Park IQ - Test" #Get the required workspace $workspace = Get-PowerBIWorkspace -Name $workspaceName # Get all datasets in current workspace if($workspace.Name -eq $workspaceName){ Write-Host "Getting Datasets in Workspace $($workspace.Name) id: $($workspace.Id)" # Get all datasets in current workspace $wsDatasets = Invoke-PowerBIRestMethod -Url "groups/$($workspace.Id)/datasets" -Method Get | ConvertFrom-Json # Loop datasets of workspace foreach($dataset in $wsDatasets.value){ $gateway = Invoke-PowerBIRestMethod -Url "groups/$($workspace.id)/datasets/$($dataset.id)/Default.GetBoundGatewayDataSources" -Method GET | ConvertFrom-Json Write-Host "Getting Datasources in Dataset $($dataset.name) with id: $($dataset.id)" # Takeover Datasets Invoke-PowerBIRestMethod -Url "groups/$($workspace.Id)/datasets/$($dataset.id)/Default.TakeOver" -Method Post foreach($datasource in $gateway.value){ if($datasource.datasourceType -eq "AzureDataLakeStorage" -and $datasource.connectionDetails.Contains($adlHostOld)) { Write-Host "Found datasource $($datasource.datasourceType)" Write-Host "Datasource connection details: $($datasource.connectionDetails)" Write-Host "This datasource will be deleted! I will appreciate if someone can help me address this matter.

How to publish 2 reports with same App Workspace?

$

Hi All,

I have 2 power BI reports. For one we have provided access to selected users and publishing this via premium app workspace.
For the second report, we want everyone to have access in the organization.
As my first report is an important one, we are publishing that as a default report for the app workspace.  Is it possible to create a different app like icon for the second report in the same workspace and publish it to the entire organization?
I have only one app workspace and I want 2 separate reports to publish and have 2 separate icons on power bi service.

Thanks,
Sanj

How to disable a default filter value and force report to only take in a passed variable in the urf?

$

I have a report that looks like this:

Clipboarder.2020.06.23-002.png

The dataset behind the report is filtered based on the ID dropdown selection in the pink visual at the top right, and the field values from the resulting filtered record(s) are displayed in the red and blue visuals. (Red visuals show the Top 2 record counts with the selected ID, and Blue visuals show the Top 1 record with the selected ID).

To get to the report, we use a report URL with the filter ID variable in it. It looks something like this, where the ending '1022' is the value of a variable that gets passed from a PowerApps Canvas app. We also have a javascript bookmarklet that prompts for an ID before loading the filtered report.

https://app.powerbi.com/ [ blah blah ] /ReportSection?filter=cr3df_CDSEntity/cr3df_id eq '1022'

Our problem is that even though the URL has been constructed to have an ID value for the filter, the report still loads first with some other ID. For example, we will use the above URL with 1022 in the filter to open the report in the web browser, but we get 11111 prepopulated as a default in the dropdown control. The good news is that no data is actually loaded in the visuals (the screenshot is just a MS Paint mock up with examples), and the dropdown list does get filtered to show 1022 as the only other option apart from the 11111.

(We don't want other IDs to show up for selection due to privacy concerns. We don't want report viewers to be able to navigate to some other person's data.)

But the default ID that gets loaded in the report is really odd and annoying and imperfect. How can we do away with it? If the URL used to open the report contains the ?filter query then just load that ID filter straight away and only have that ID in the dropdown. If the URL used is the report's direct link ending in /ReportSection, then fine, load a default and list all IDs in the dropdown. But can it not do this weird thing where a report link with a filter query for "A" returns both "A" and "B" AND bizarrely defaults to "B"?

My report loads an extra filter value next to my desired value when using a filter query in the URL

Publishing PowerBI App

I have a workspace owner admin who is attempting to publish an app to a group of users (O365 MS Teams group). Unfortunately they are not able to see any groups when attempting this.

It should be noted that members of the IT team have tested and are able to see groups. However we want owner admins to have this privilege.

Can anyone advise on the specific permissions needed to allow this owner admin to publish his app to the desired group?

Salesforce credentials invalid for cloud refresh, but work in desktop

$

Hello,

We have a large data set that uses the salesforce object online service to get data from salesforce. It's been refreshing 8 times a day for about 2 years. Recently we started having the odd refresh fail with the message "The credentials provided for the Salesforce source are invalid. (Source at https://login.salesforce.com/.)" , which wasn't a major issue as it was refreshing the other 7 times. Now the data set is getting this error every time it tries to refresh, scheduled or on demand.

The desktop version of the data set refreshes fine with the credentials. And when either the cloud or desktop version refreshes salesforce logs a succesful authentication via the PowerBI oauth app.

Our salesforce settup is a live enterprise instance with a non SSO service account. We haven't changed the service account permissions recently and it's credentials aren't due a change. We are also nowhere near our API call limit, even with other integrations running with Salesforce.

Obviously i'm keen to get the data set refreshing again, as the alternatives look manual or involve a lot of rework. Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks for your time.

Will

What If Parameter not allowing entry

Hi,

I am having an issue with a published report which has a manuel entry What If parameter box to allow the user to enter values into the report. Occasionally, this box will not take any entry when using the report in the Power BI service. It seems that you type in a value and it reverts back to the previous value which was in the box. This doesn't happen all of the time and also doesn't happen when using the embedded link to the report which is leading me to believe it may be a bug. Has anyone else had this issue at all?
