Power BI direct connection to Redshift

Hi everybody,

I would like to set up a direct connection between Power BI and a Redshift dataset without using ODBC. I would like to refresh my Reports by connecting directly to the cloud service avoiding the use of an On-Premise Data Gateway.

When I create a Report using Power BI Desktop I can get data from Amazon Redshift without any problems (both in Import and DirectQuery mode). However to refresh the Reports published in Power BI Server I need to set up inbound rules in my Redshift cluster to accept traffic from certain Power BI IP addresses. According to the discussion at the end of this blog post

https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/announcing-support-for-amazon-redshift-reports-in-the-power-bi-service/

there are two ways to set up the IP adresses:

  • configure an Inbound rule for traffic coming from anywhere. This is not very safe though so I would prefer not to use it
  • download the list of IP addresses for a given region. Problem: the list is very long and apparently the range could change every week

Is there any other way to achieve this? Maybe an automatic process to define the appropriate inbound rules without having to configure all the IP adresses in the range manually?

Many thanks in advance!
