Power BI Web Service + Redshift Cluster in VPC

Hello,

I am a solution architect assisting a client with Power BI running on top of their Redshift DW. They have Power BI Pro licensing, and are currently using the desktop client as well as the web services. The Redshift cluster is in a VPC. It's also worth mentioning that currently on desktop we're using the native Redshift connector.

We're having the issue of once the Power BI content is published to the web service - the credentials are not passed in turn. Accessing that content via web service (app.powerbi.com) gives us the following error:

"Failed to update data source credentials: ODBC: ERROR [08S01].." etc...

We did see this post:

https://community.powerbi.com/t5/Power-Query/Proper-way-of-interacting-with-Redshift-inside-private-subnet-in/m-p/358379#M15685

We're planning to follow the process there for configuring a gateway + ODBC connection.

What we need to understand has 2 parts:

  1. Is this the advocated method of configuring Power BI Web Services access to a Redshift cluster running in a VPC?
  2. Will this configuration allow for access to the data when not on the core network and not logged into their VPN? - the end goal is for management to be able to view reports & dashboards off-site, and not logged into VPN.

Any help that could be provided here would be greatly appreciated!
